Rare events, waffles and FREE lunches

We won’t serve this again for four years

It’s, yep, Cheap Date Night, and as luck would have it, it’s also February 29, which comes along only once every four years, so we’re pulling out the stops tonight for a fabulous dinner for you cheapskates. (And you know you’re out there.)

Crispy fried chicken piled on buttermilk cornmeal waffles with bourbon maple bacon BBQ sauce. Yikes. Two plates of same for $10. Or you can have the tacos. Right.

Fish: a moving target

Winter ocean conditions means we have a certain fish for a day or so, and then, gee, the ocean doesn’t give us any more of that fish, so we move on to something else. For the moment, our fish is beautiful, spanking fresh grouper from the Sea of Cortez, or Mar de Cortez if you are local to that part of the world.

We’re dressing it up in a spicy almond jacket, and serving it with a wild rice and black quinoa risotto with dried apricots and lacinato kale. On Friday, though, who knows what the ocean will give us? If you like grouper, NOW is the time.

Our 15 minutes of fame, thanks to Hood River Organic

We had a blast last week filming a little video with Dan Thall of Hood River Organic and videographer Chris Emerick.

The plot? Oh so simple. Dan brought in the weekly CSA box that goes to their 200+ customers (many of them in Portland) and Kathy got to create a dish from what was in the box. She thinks she should get a prize or somethin’ for using the following box ingredients in ONE dish: kale, chard, potatoes, leeks, parsnips, crimini mushrooms and eggs. What did she fix? Breakfast for dinner. You can watch it yourself at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTcu-bsrvfQ.

And here’s kudos to Dan and his partner Brian “Mr. Connie” Shaw, who purchased a massive Portland MAX train advertising campaign to get more CSA customers. The ads are known as the Sistine Chapel ads because the images are all on the ceilings of the MAX cars. I guess you see them tipping your head back in ecstasy whilst eating a nice Swiss Gourmet apple from Hood River Organic. Good luck, guys. And thanks for helping to win more friends for Gorge agriculture.
